LAUSANNE (SUI): French marathon record holder Christelle Daunay is set to start in the Hervis Prague Half Marathon (IAAF Gold Label Road Race) on April 2nd. Daunay does not run the half marathon in preparation of a full marathon as she is only aiming to compete in a marathon in the autumn. Daunay will focus this year on the 10.000m, 10K and half marathons. In particular she has the French 10.000m record in her sights writes European Athletics. The record stands at 31:42.83.

KAWASAKI (JPN): After large areas of Japan’s northern Pacific coast have been swamped by a devastating tsunami, engulfing entire towns following a major offshore quake at the beginning of March, many cultural and sport events had to be cancelled or relocated from the country. However, according to the news provided by the organizers, the JAAF has decided to hold the Kawasaki Super Meet as scheduled (8 May). It will be a “charity” event for the victims of the Japan disaster. The 3rd of the 2011 IAAF World Challenge meetings is also a part of the Hammer Throw Challenge as the Golden Grand Prix Kawasaki.

BLOOMINGTON (USA): Canadian high jumper Derek Drouin sustained a foot injury while competing in the high jump last weekend at the Big Ten/SEC Challenge. The injury will require surgery and will cause Drouin to sit out the 2011 outdoor season. While recovery and rehab will take time, Indiana’s medical staff expects Drouin to make a complete recovery. Drouin will seek a medical hardship redshirt for this outdoor season and return to competition once his rehab is complete. He cleared in March 233 to win the NCAA Indoor title and equalled national indoor record.

CARLSBAD (USA): Americans Christin Wurth-Thomas and Jen Rhines, as well as Ethiopian Aheza Kiros are the favourites for the 26th edition of the Carlsbad “World’s Fastest 5k” on April 3rd. Kiros, the 2009 champion and 2010 runner-up to world record-holder Meseret Defar of Ethiopia, has a 5000 m personal best of 14:56.33 on the track from 2009, and has run 15:26 at Carlsbad. Also in the race is Pauline Korikwiang of Kenya, who was just recently seventh at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and holds a PR of 14:45.98, Russian European indoor silver winner at 3000 m Olesya Syreva of Russia and Eloise Wellings of Australia.

KAMPALA (UGA): Kenyan athlete Daniel Kiplagat Sambu has been in an Uganda jail for the last 2 months. Kiplagat Sambu was convicted of being illegally in Uganda after he won the MTI Marathon in Kampala. Athletics Kenya is working on the case to release the athlete reports AllAfrica.com.

LAUSANNE (SUI): IOC director general Urs Lacotte is stepping down from his position because of health reasons. The IOC states it concerns a mutual decision made “in view of the current state of Urs Lacotte’s health.”

FLAGSTAFF (USA) : German European track champion from 2006 Jan Fitschen is currently training in Flagstaff in preparation of his marathon debut in Dusseldorf in May and lets leichtathletik.de know he is in very good shape. The former European 10.000m champion reaches mileage of up to 230 kilometers per week while training in the Arizona altitude.

NAIROBI (KEN): Kenya’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga has announced that Kenya will bid for the 2020 Olympic Games. “No other country in Africa has won as many medals at the Olympics as Kenya and we are appealing to Brazil, who organizes the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to support us towards achieving this goal,” Ondinga was quoted in Chinadaily.com.

SOFIA (BUL): Olympic and world semifinalist at 400 m hurdles Tsvetelina Kirilova became on Friday a mother for second time. Her daughter Yavora is 3.6 kg and 50 cm. Her first child is a boy Emil. Bulgarian media are pointing out that high jump world record holder Stefka Kostadinova celebrated also on friday her 46th birthday.

NEW YORK (USA): The winner of next month’s More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon in New York City will receive the Meyerhoff award to honor the race’s late champion, Sally Meyerhoff, who was struck and killed on March 8 by a pick-up truck, while cycling near her home in Maricopa, Ariz. Meyerhoff won the 2010 edition of the race last April in a course record 1:14:40, despite running in cold temperatures accompanied by heavy rain.

SYDNEY (AUS): Athletics Australia selectors have confirmed an initial team of 27 for the 7th IAAF World Youth Championships, with 10 boys and 17 girls set for Lille. Boasting 15 national under 18 champions and an astounding 23 graduates of the Athletics Australia Under 17 Development Squad, the Australian team also includes national under 18 record holders Danielle McConnell (hammer throw) and Elizabeth Parnov as well as former Australian representatives Monica Brennan (200m), Elliott Lang (javelin), Jenny Blundell (800m) and Brodie Cross (pole vault). Informs Athletics Australia.

LONDON (GBR): AP informs that IAAF is investigating 2001 world 100 m champion Zhanna Block of Ukraine for doping and could change the results from the event in Edmonton ten years ago. Block (38) who clocked in Edmonton final her life-time best of 10.82 and was a surprise winner over Marion Jones is under scrutiny after a U.S. anti-doping arbitration panel suspended her husband - coach and agent Mark Block - for 10 years last week after finding he trafficked in drugs supplied by BALCO and gave them to his wife. She also won silver medals at World Championships 1997 and 2003. In her career she clocked legal 23 sub 11 times at the 100 m, informs Tilastopaja.

MADRID (ESP): Spanish marathoner Chema Martinez, along with football player David Villa, is the face of a new promotional campaign set up by the Spanish athletics federation and supported by Divina Pastora Seguros. The campaign will travel through Spain’s major cities under the theme ‘united by a passion’ and should help raise funds for the UNICEF project ‘schools for Africa’.

LAWRENCE (USA): The city of Lawrence will help showcase a unique portion of the 2011 Kansas Relays, as city commissioners gave their stamp of approval on three downtown events. Downtown Lawrence will now be the stage for the elite men’s shot put, elite men’s long jump and the street mile events. The shot put will kick things off Wednesday, April 20, with the street mile and long jump being contested the following day. Top names for shot put should be reigning world champion Christian Cantwell, former world champion Reese Hoffa and Cory Martin. Along with them Canadian record holder Dylan Armstrong, Jamaican record holder Dorian Scott. Main invitiational events will be held on Saturday April 23.

ROTTERDAM (NED): Kenyan Rita Jeptoo is the latest addition to a strong field for the ABN AMRO Rotterdam marathon on April 10th. Jeptoo holds a personal best of 2:23:38 but will face tough opposition from Dutch Hilda Kibet and Ethiopian Atsede Habtamu. Debuting in the race is Ethiopian Fyles Ongori (1:07.38 for the half marathon). Organizers confirm many athletes have chosen the Rotterdam marathon as a qualifying race for the Daegu world championships.

MELBOURNE (AUS): Red Bull Australia has announced a deal with World and Olympic pole-vault champion Steve Hooker to become a brand ambassador for the energy drink. No financial terms or length of the contract have been given, but Hooker joins other Australian sportsmen associated with the Australian subsidiary of Red Bull, including Formula One driver Mark Webber, and surfer Mick Fanning according to SportsPro.

NEW YORK (USA): New York City half marathon winner Caroline Rotich ran to a new course record of 1:08.52 last weekend but admitted her heart felt heavy after the recent disasters in Japan. Rotich has spent her teenage years in Sendai after earning a scholarship to Sendai Ikuei Gakuen, the same high school that Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru attended, when she was 14 years old. After the race Rotich was quoted “I remember how things were when I was there and to see how they are now breaks my heart.”

SUNDERLAND (GBR): The University of Sunderland is to be the training base for Grenada’s Olympic team ahead of the 2012 London Olympics writes Insidethegames. The announcement comes three months after a Grenadian National Olympics Committee (GNOC) delegation spent a day touring the university’s facilities. One of top talents will most probably be sprinter Kirani James who recently clocked indoor junior all-time best at 400 m (44.80) and is multiple IAAF World junior and youth champion.
