LONDON (GBR): Simon Hart of Telegraph writes that current world record in women marathon 2:15:25 by Paula Radcliffe may have to carry the caveat “set in a mixed race” under proposed changes to the way women’s marathon marks are recorded. The road-running commission of the International Association of Athletics Federations, which met in London, has recommended that the women’s world record be split into two in future — one for women-only races and one for mixed races. Radcliffe’s record, set in London in 2005 and considered one of the most untouchable world marks in athletics, would be considered ‘mixed’ because for that year only, the London women’s race included two male pacemakers. The change, which would have to be approved by the IAAF congress in Daegu in August, would not affect Radcliffe’s current pre-eminence in the history books because she also has the mark for the fastest marathon set in a women’s race 2:17:42 in London 2005.

BOSTON (USA): New Zealand runner Kim Smith explained she felt sharp pains in her calf during the Boston Marathon, causing her to fall back from her impressive lead in the early stages of the marathon. “I tried to change the way I was running for a few miles, to see if it would ease. It would go on and off, and in the end I just couldn’t run any further because it was really painful.’’ Smith was quoted boston.com.
