LONDON (GBR): European 110m hurdles champion Andy Turner confirmed he will not compete at the European indoor championships in Paris in March. Turner has been running a couple of indoor races and is confident he can break his indoor personal best before the end of the season. Tuner will be running some more indoor races in preparation for the outdoor season writes yourlocalguardian.co.uk. It is still expected final decision about Paris participation will be made in by Andy Turner after Birmingham meet on February 19.

LONDON (GBR): The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) will se up a “rapid response unit” ahead of next year’s Olympics and Paralympics to “rebut or challenge negative stories appearing in the world media” writes Insidethegames. The Olympics can boost a country’s profile, as was the case with Sydney when it hosted the 2000 Olympics, but there is a greater risk of a disastrous Games damaging a country’s reputation concluded a report from the FCO.

SAN DIEGO (USA): Following her victory at the USA national cross country championships Shalane Flanagan announced she will be racing a lot more in 2011 compared to the 2010 season in which she was preparing The New York City marathon. Flanagan said to be frustrated to have missed the 2010 European track season and plans to run everything from the 1500m tot the 10,000m in 2011. SHEFFIELD (GBR, Feb 6): At Inter City Meeting Tom Parsons again this season cleared Paris qualifier 228 in high jump with Robbie Grabarz next 2.24. Bernice Wilson competed once again during the weekend winng 60 m in 7.32. Holly Bleasdale, still only 19 improved her pole vault best to 450 and tried at new UK record 461 cm.

MERU (KEN, Feb 5): Little known Mary Mananu (21:16) surprised East African cross country bronze medallist Fridah Kaimuri (21:30) to win the junior women’s 6km race in the NBK/Athletics Kenya Eastern Branch Cross Country championship in Meru. Silas Muturi (23:00) won the junior men’s race ahead of Daniel Kinyua (23:24) and Alex Mureithi (23:32). Former Standard Chartered Nairobi International Marathon champion Pamela Lisoreng (26:58) won the Administration Police Cross Country championship senior women’s 8km race at Administration Police Training College, Embakasi. Mukundi Mwangi (35:59) triumphed in the men’s race, ahead of Peter Kirui (35:40) and Henry Chirchir (35:41). Informs The Nation.

KINGSTON (JAM): Gleaner informs that the Camperdown Classics is scheduled in good shape for the February 12. The meet is scheduled to take place at the University of the West Indies’ Usain Bolt Stadium in Mona. It is expected that several members of the Glen Mills coached Racers Track Club will compete. The event, which will have its seventh staging, will once again see top high school teams competing for cash prizes in the Class One 4x100 metres to help offset their cost to the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia, USA, in April. The top three male and female teams will share $100,000 with the winners getting $60,000, second $25,000 and third $15,000.

KYIV (UKR): Ukrainian Athlete of the Year is triple jump European winner Olga Saladukha and on the men side nine-time European CC Champion Sergiy Lebid. The ceremony was held on Tuesday at ACCO International exhibition center. The surprise of the year award went to the 4x100 m women relay team which won gold at European Championships in Barcelona. Vladimir Fedorets who is guiding the preparation of one of the team members Yelizaveta Bryzgina got the coach of the year award. Award at the end of succesfull career was given to shot put olympic winner Yuriy Belonog.

RIO DE JANEIRO (GBR): Henrique Meirelles, Brazil’s former Central Bank President, became a president of the new agency overseeing the building preparations for the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. It is expected to be fully set-up next month when the Brazilian Congress passes a law to establish a rubber-stamp.

AUCKLAND (AUS): Galen Rupp will travel with his coach Alberto Salazar to New Zealand to compete in a special 10,000m on February 26th. Rupp, who has a career best 10,000m time of 27:10.74, is likely to shatter the New Zealand Allcomers record, set by Dick Tayler (27:46.4).
