BANGALORE (IND, Jun 12): The second day of the India´s National Senior Inter-State Athletics Championships at Sree Kanteerava Stadium witnessed the first national record of the meet as Bharatinder Singh scored 7658 points to better Jora Singh’s five year old mark of 7502 points. Triple jumper Arpinder Singh was the cynosure of all eyes as the 18-year-old Punjab athlete upsets national record holder Renjith Maheswary for the second time in four months this year. Arpinder, the Asian junior silver medallist, delivered a stupendous performance as he won the National Games at Ranchi this February with an incredible 16.62 ahead of Maheswary 15.96. Asian games gold medalist hurdler A.C. Ashwini brought cheer to the home-crowd as she easily put aside her opposition to win the 400m run in 52.82. Commonwealth silver medallist Harwant Kaur won the women’s discus throw from Krishna Poonia (58.78 to 55.45). Informs Murali Krishnan.

CELJE (SLO, Jun 12): Brent LaRue of USA who is living in Slovenia improved to 49.77 win at 400 m hurdles during second day of Club Championships here. Martina Ratej achieved 56.20 in javelin.

LONDON (GBR): Sebastian Coe, chairman of London 2012, has become an ambassador for Sported, the charitable organisation set up by Sir Keith Mills, who worked alongside the two-time Olympic 1500 meters gold medallist during the capital’s successful bid to host the Games. Sported, which was launched nationally last month, is a charity looking to play the role of “business angels” by providing support to the sports for development sector in the UK. Originally inspired by Sir Keith’s experience running London’s successful bid, he decided to make a personal commitment to delivering the legacy of the Games by setting up an organisation that aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged young people through sport. Coe, who was present at the launch event in London, has now committed to becoming an ambassador for the charity. Insidethegames informs.

MADRID (ESP): Spanish media are informing that national record holder at 5000 m Alemayehu Bezabeh (24, Ethiopian origin) has been banned for two years for his involvement in the anti-doping investigation "Operation Galgo." It is the decision of Spain´s Sports Disciplinary Committee. High Council for Sports asked for four year ban while initially Spanish Athletics Federation cleared Bezabeh. The 12:57.25 runner and European CC Champion 2009 was detained by Spanish investigators in December 2010 while traveling with trainer Manuel Pascua, who was also implicated in the case. Bezabeh was also given a 3000 E fine. The decision is based on the facts found during the investigation. These are confirming that the athlete participated actively in the implementation of a method of blood doping. Spanish Athletics Federation issued its view on the case at its website but in summary accepted the decision.

KUMAGAYA (JPN, Jun 10): Yuki Sato won the 10 000 m during first day of Japanese Championships with 28:10.87. Second Akinobu Murasawa posted 28:15.63. In the absence of national record holder Kayoko Fukushi (recovering from recent surgery) in the women race the win for Kayo Sugihara in 32:18.79 over Remi Nakamoto 32:20.81. Masumi Aya achieved new meet record in women hammer 66.32. In men´s 200 m heats Hitoshi Saito was the fastest (20.55, +0.8) and in the 400 m hurdles heats Yuta Imazeki (49.54).

AMSTERDAM (NED): The Dutch Athletics Federation (KNAU) has released its preliminary team for the European team Championships First League division in Izmir, Turkey. They will be particularly strong in the throwing events with Erik Cadée and Monique Jansen in the discus throw and Rutger Smith and Melissa Boekelman in the shot put. Arnoud Okken and Yvonne Hak are strong in the 800m and in form Gregory Sedoc starts in the 110H. Relays and sprint events are to be decided later.

OSLO (NOR): Jamaica-born Canadian Donovan Bailey has hailed the halt of the drain of top sprint athletes from the Caribbean island when speaking at a press conference at the City Hall in Oslo. The 43-year-old Bailey emigrated to Canada at the age of 13 just as many Jamaicans have found themselves competing for other adopted countries, but Bailey said improved infrastructure has helped and will continue to help persuade many more to stay and train in Jamaica. Interestingly, he clocked his fastest 200 m in any conditions, windy 20.14 in Oslo in 1997. Bailey plans to work for Canadian TV during World Championships in Daegu.

NEW YORK (USA): Deena Kastor and four-time winner Lornah Kiplagat are the latest additions to the 40th edition of the NYRR Mini 10K in New York this weekend. Kastor is making her return to competition after giving birth to her daughter Piper Bloom only four months ago. With 2:19.36 the 38-year-old still holds the American marathon record even though she told media she is still far from that form. Previously announced names are Linet Masai, Lilya Shobukhova, Kim Smith and Jo Pavey.

GATESHEAD (GBR): Top international athletes from both sides of the Atlantic will come together in a head-to-head battle at the Great North CityGames on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside on September 17th. Now in its third year, the unique CityGames event will play out one of the greatest rivalries in international sport; with the Aviva Great Britain & Northern Ireland team taking on their USA counterparts over six disciplines including the pole vault, long jump, track sprints and road races, all the action will be televised live on BBC.
