NAIROBI (KEN): On Saturday the last force championships in cross country in Kenya will be held, the ones for police. Here also world champion in marathon Abel Kirui is announced. In another action former double world marathon winner Catherine Ndereba said that in case she will be fit enough, she wants to be in Daegu for the world title race. “My first priority is to reclaim my Boston title and then go for World Championships if selected. If I do well in Boston which is one of the races to be used to select the team for Daegu, I have a chance of being the first Kenyan female World Marathon Majors winner,” disclosed Salina Kosgei, another Kenyan top female marathon runner for Daily Nation.

LAUSANNE (SUI): European Athletics reports that France’s European 400m hurdles record holder Stéphane Diagana has been moved out of intensive care after being seriously injured in a road accident last week. Diagana is now in the hospital’s ear, nose and throat unit and they said his condition was ‘favourable’.

MARRAKECH (MAR, Jan 30): In a very cloudy weather Ethiopians dominated the 22th edition of the Marathon International de Marrakech. Girma Beyene clocked 2:10:22 ahead of Shumi Etisha 2:11:08, third Moroccan Mourad Maarofit 2:11:20. In Norway living Urige Buta of Ethiopia achieved 2:11:47 as 5th. Wudnesh Debele of Ethiopia was the best woman in 2:37:00. Asmae Leghzaoui posted new event best in half-marathon with 1:10:47 ahead of Bahraini Kareema Yasin 1:11:06. Men´s race winner Mulugeta Wondimu of Ethiopia beat by 5 seconds Kenyan Kennedy Kimutai (1:02:00-1:02:05). Around 7000 athletes competed in all races. The course was wet so it caused difficulties for the runners. Legendary runners like Khalid Skah, Mustapha Nechadi and Brahim Boutayeb watched the event.


INDOOR (Adams 17.32, Nazarova 689)

REIMS (FRA, Jan 30): Czech Adam Sebastian Helcelet won the heptathlon as part of international combined events match with 5735 points. Second French Florian Geffrouais (5669) and third Dutch Rietveld Pelle (5636). Czech team won this event with 16 784 ahead of France 16 686, Netherlands 16 315, Great Britain 15 965 and Spain 15 417. Antoniette Nana Djimou scored impressive world leading 4540 points to win women´s pentathlon. Czech 400 m hurdles world level athlete Zuzana Hejnova showed impressive versatility with 4406 points (2:07.99 in the final 800 m). Here France won 13 230 clearly ahead of Czech Republic (11 789), Spain 11 705 and Great Britain 11 373.

UNIVERSITY PARK (USA, Jan 29): Ryan Foster has become the first Tasmanian to break the four minute mile barrier. Running for Penn State University at an invitational indoor meeting in Pennsylvania Foster ran 3:58.49 to place third in the race, behind Cory Leslie 3:57.97 and Jeff See 3:58.15. Foster bettered the 37 year old mark previously held by Randal Markey of 4:00.9. Casimir Loxsom posted 1:47.36 at 800 m and Marquis Holsotn 46.87 at 400 m. In women races Aurieyall Scott got 23.17 at 200 m ahead of Shavon Greaves 23.18. Shana Cox posted 52.53 at 400 m.

MOGILYOV (BLR, Jan 29): Anis Ananenka posted 1:48.18 in the 800 m. Yulia Balykina clocked 7.30 in the 60 m with Olympic champion form Athens Yulia Nesterenko clocking 7.43 in the B-race. Svetlana Usovich achieved 52.48 in the 400 m and Natalya Koreyvo 4:11.57 in the 1500 m. Excellent the 671 of Veronika Shutkova in long jump ahead of Nastasiya Mironchyk 664. Alena Kapets achieved 18.20 in the shot put.

LONDON (GBR): World junior 400m hurdles finalist and relay bronze medalist Jack Green is looking ahead to a breakout 2011 season after being convinced by European and Commonwealth champion David Greene to join him in Malcolm Arnold’s stable writes Athletics Weekly. Green was all set to go to Nebraska University at the end of 2010, but a timely call by hurdles coaching guru Arnold persuaded him to move to Bath. Green has recently returned from the UKA warm-weather training trip to South Africa and aims at qualifying for the 400m at the European indoor championships. “Outdoors, Malcolm has set me the target of getting the World Championships A standard (49.25), although I feel I could even dip under 49 seconds,” Greene was quoted.

PUNTA UMBRIA (ESP): His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias, Felipe de Borbón y Grecia, visited the circuit of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Punta Umbría 2011, during an event in Andalusia with the president of the Junta de Andalucía, José Antonio Griñán, the minister of Tourism, Commerce and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía, Luciano Alonso, the president of the Diputación de Huelva, Petronila Guerrero, and the major of Punta Umbría, Gonzalo Rodríguez. The Prince of Asturias reviewed the circuit and was very satisfied with the facilities that will host Punta Umbria 2011 on March 20th. This event will place Andalusia one more time in the focus of the best world sport events and confirm that this region is an irresistible setting for sportspeople and sport tourism. The expected visit of Prince Felipe was an important institutional support for the organizers. Organizers are informing in a release.

MOSCOW (RUS): US sprinter Josh Norman who currently leads the world lists with 6.58 signed for Russian Winter IAAF Indoor Permit on February 6. His main rival should be Trinidad´s top sprinter Marc Burns. Other names for men´s 60 m include Emanuele di Gregorio of Italy, Jamaican Oshane Bailey and Nigerian Peter Emelieze.

DOHA (QAT): Two more doping cases are announced from Asian Games in November in China. Ahmed Dheeb of Qatar, who won silver in the men’s discus, tested positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites.Palestinian Awajna Abdalnasser took part in the men’s 800 metres and tested positive for norandrosterone, another anabolic agent. Both were disqualified from the competition and are facing two year bans.

DUSSELDORF (GER): Men´s pole vault is a must at 6th PSD Bank Meeting in Dusseldorf on February 11 (EA Indoor Permit). Germany is one of the top countries in this event and meet director Marc Osenberg devoted most of his activities to pole vault. Alexander Straub wants to win for third time, but Malte Mohr is in great shape. New additions into races are former world champion Eliud Kipchoge at 5000 m and steeple olympic winner Brimin Kipruto in the 1500 m.

LIEVIN (FRA, Jan 22): World indoor record holder Teddy Tamgho started his season in impressive way. At regional meet he leaped to excellent world lead 17.46 m. The 21-years old World indoor champion never before in first competition achieved such a high quality mark. Interesting personal best for Gaetan Bucki (30) in shot put with 20.35 m. He missed the national record of Yves Niare from 2009 only by 7 cm (20.42).



USA (Jan 22 action: Charfreitag 24.71, Phiri 20.80, Simpson 4:28.60)


NORMAN: At JD Martin Invitational excellent world lead in weight throw by Slovak European Champion Libor Charfreitag with 24.71. It was new meet record. “I think there is room for improvement. I just need more competition, here we were only very few. But technically I m feeling it is going better and better,” said the Slovak Athlete of the Year 2010. In the history of this event only 9 athletes achieved so far 24+ marks. Rakieem Salam clocked 6.67 in 60 m heats.

ATHENS (GRE): The court case of Greek sprinters from 2004 started on Friday. It is about the accident of Kostas Kenteris and Ekaterini Thanou during the night of August 12, 2004. But national federation president Vasilis Sevastis and the doping control responsible on that day Mr. Valasiadis sent apologies to the court. It should continue next Thursday.

LOUGHBOROUGH (GBR, Jan 22): World champion Jessica Ennis at an open meeting here clocked seasons fastest for her 8.03 at 60 m hurdles. She followed with a sub par long jump of 6.16 (and three run throughs) but then was delighted with a huge overall personal best in the shot put 14.61. Her former best was 14.25 from last year Gotzis. Bernice Wilson won the 60 m with 7.31.

MOGILYOV (BLR, Jan 22): During second day of regional Mogilyov championships Anna Tashpulatova beat with 52.95 at 400 m experienced Svetlana Usovich (53.07). In 60 m finals Maksim Lynsha clocked 6.71 and Yulia Balykina 7.30. Anastasiya Mironchik-Ivanova leaped to 654 in long jump.

VOLGOGRAD (RUS, Jan 22): At Gubernator Cup meeting olympic winner Andrey Silnov started the season with 230 third attempt clearance. In women high jump Youth Olympic Games winner Mariya Kuchina cleared 190 (her indoor PB) ahead of 2004 olympic gold medalist Yelena Slesarenko (188). Maksim Sidorov again over 20 in the shot put with 20.12. In sprints Roman Smirnov achieved 21.16 at 200 m and last year Russian U23 100 m champion Aleksandr Shpaer improved hugely at 60 m from 6.78 to 6.69. European indoor winner from Torino Antonina Krivoshapka won her event 400 m in 52.84. Yulia Katsura was the best in the 200 m (23.49) and Svetlana Nabokina at 60 m (7.29). Olga Balayeva equalled her indoor PB in long jump (657) when former European champion Lyudmila Kolchanova was only third (610). Natalya Kutyakova got 14.04 in women triple and Anna Omarova 18.09 in women shot.


CROSS COUNTRY

POTCHEFSTROOM (RSA, Jan 22): Kgosi Tsotsane won the 12 km at South African CC Trials in 37:57 ahead of defending champion Stephen Mokoka (37:58) in hot and humid conditions. Lebogang Phalula won women´s 8 km in 29:59 with her twin sister Lebo Phalula third 30:04. Between them Annarien Van Schalkwyk 30:00. Athletics South Africa confirmed they would announce the teams for the African Cross Country Championships in Cape Town on March 6 and the World Cross Country Championships in Spain next week.

NEW YORK (USA): Mara Yamauchi, the second-fastest British marathon woman of all time with a 2:23:12 personal best, has been forced to withdraw from the Virgin London Marathon, with a hamstring injury. Yamauchi, 37, who finished sixth at the Beijing Olympic Marathon, had hoped to run both the NYC Half-Marathon on 20 March (she is the defending champion), and then the London race on 17 April. Informs RRW.

LAUSANNE (SUI): British European junior 110m hurdles champion Lawrence Clarke aims at winning the gold medal at the European U23 championships in Ostrava later this year. The youngster trains with Malcolm Arnold and improved under his guidance to 13.69 and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. “Ideally, I want a major world medal and to break the 13-second barrier in my career, as that is where all my heroes have been,” Clarke was quoted on European Athletics. They also talk about the aristocratic background of the athlete who has presidents and prime ministers in his family line.
