NEW YORK (USA): Rising American stars Bobby Curtis, Patrick Smyth, and Mo Trafeh will join three-time Olympian Abdi Abdirahman and four-time Chicago Marathon winner Khalid Khannouchi, who is looking to make his running comeback, at the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K on Saturday, May 15, in Central Park, it was announced by New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg.The top Americans will face a tough international contingent, which includes 2010 NYC Half-Marathon champion Peter Kamais of Kenya, Australian 10,000-meter record-holder (27:29.73) Collis Birmingham, and seven-time NCAA Champion Alistair Cragg of Ireland. STANFORD (USA): Stanford track and field will host one of the most elite track meetings in the nation with the Payton Jordan Invitational on May 1, informed gostanford.com. The men‘s 10,000 meters will join Galen Rupp, Samuel Chelanga with Alistair Cragg of Ireland. The featured women‘s event will be the 5,000 meters with Americans Shalane Flanagan and Lisa Koll. Stanford meet will have at 1500 meters All-Americans Chris Derrick, Dylan Ferris and Elliott Heath. Although the Payton Jordan Invitational is known for the distance events, the sprints and field events will also be strong this year.

BARCELONA (ESP): Jesús Espana, one of the Spain‘s big medal hopes, wants to win the 5000 meters at Barcelona 2010, as its his only goal for this year, he said in an interview. But he also said that anyone who represents the Spanish team this summer can win the title, such as Sergio Sánchez, who wants double at 5000 and 10000 meters. The first big test for Espana on track will be in Huelva on June 9, later the European Team Championships and then the Spanish Championships in Avilés.

LOS ANGELES (USA): Former UCLA and USC athletes will be inducted into the UCLA-USC annual dual meeting hall of fame before the event starts on May 1st at Drake stadium. The inductees from UCLA are: Mike Tully (pole vault), Joanna Hayes (hurdles), Steve Lewis (sprints), Dave Laut (shot put) and Chelsea Johnson (pole vault). Those from USC are: Earl McCullough (hurdles), Louie Zamperini (distance), Lesley Noll (middle distance) and Bryan Krill (sprints).

KINGSTON (JAM): After the National Stadium in Jamaica was inspected by KSAC, Independence Park Limited (IPL) received a list of defects, such as exposed electrical wires in several areas and which must be rectified soon. IPL is presently working to correct these defects under the close supervision of the KSAC and there has already been one follow up visit to the Stadium by the KSAC. All should be ok for Saturday´s Jamaican Invitational meet.

MADRID (ESP, Apr 25): Kenyan Thompson Cherogony won in new course record 2:11:27 the 33rd Madrid Marathon. Former mark of Joseph Ngolepus was 2:11:30 in 2006. In all races 15 000 runners were registered. Second Dickson Chumba got 2:11:54 and third Jonathan Kipkosgei 2:13:06. Best Spanish and national champion was Migel Angel Gamonal who debuted at the distance with 2:17:27. Ethiopian Girma Tadesse won the women race in 2:34:39 over her team-mate Hadish Letay (2:34:58) and Poland´s Justyna Bak (2:37:52). Spanish champion Ana Casares as 6th (2:47:50). In the 10 km race long distance legend Haile Gebrselassie won in 28:56. Francisco Espana was way back as second in 30:28.

HAWASSA (ETH): Over 350 participants have been registered for the 2010 Hawassa race in Ethiopia. The race will take place on May 2nd on the shores of lake Hawassa with races over 21km, 7km and the childrens 2km. There will also be elite races with a total purse of 45,000 birr which is the second biggest purse for a race in Ethiopia behind the Great Ethiopian Run international 10km writesgreatetheopianrun.com.

LOS ANGELES (USA): Addition to the LaShawn Merritt case is the fact that due to latest International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules any athlete who tests positive for banned drugs is automatically suspended from the next Games. That means if ban confirmed he will not be able to compete in London 2012 under any circumstances. His ban could start even from December 2009 that means he would be free to run in 2011. Also difficult with top meetings as they agreed, they will invite former drug cheats. The product that Merritt took is called „ExtenZe,“ a person familiar with the case said. ANTWERP (BEL): The marathon of Antwerp is celebrating its 25th edition with a record number of 26.500 athletes scheduled to compete on Sunday in different races. Kenyan Dismas Lotira is the favorite for the win with his personal best of 2:13.35. He will be accompanied by compatriots Nahashon Kimaiyo and Luke Kipkosgei who both will make their debut in the marathon. Belgium‘s favorite is Gino Van Geyte.

NEW YORK (USA): Reigning ING New York City Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi announced he is forming a charitable foundation called the MEB foundation. It will support a number of causes in health, fitness and education. There are no specific projects selected yet where the foundation will make donations however Keflezighi’s connection to his native Eritrea will be an influence. The ING New York City Marathon had granted the foundation 20 charity entry spots in this year‘s race where Kefleghizi will defend his title on November 7. Informs RRW.

SOFIA (BUL): Bulgaria is losing young and talented athlete. Twenty years old Marina Petkova received officially Spanish passport and already is eligible to compete for Spain. Born in Shumen on 20 March 1990 lives for four years in Palma de Mallorca. She was Spanish junior champion at 800 m. According officials form Spanish Athletic Federation the Bulgarian posses excellent qualities and is one of the most talented and promising young athletes in the middle distances.

MOSCOW (RUS): Russia named its teams for IAAF Race Walking World Cup in May in Mexico. As already previously announced world champions from Berlin (Borchin, Kirdyapkin and Kaniskina) are having byes for European Championships in Barcelona and are not selected. In the women 20 km team former world and european junior champion Vera Sokolova is the headliner with 2008 world junior champion Tatyana Mineyeva, 2008 world cup silver winner Tatyana Sibileva and Lyudmila Arkhipova. In the men 20 km squad Sergey Bakulin will compete with Denis Strelkov, Piotr Trofimov, Andrey Ruzavin and Andrey Krivov. 50 km team is composed of Sergey Sergachev, Yuriy Andronov, Sergey Melentyev and Ivan Zhbanov. Junior selections - boys: Valeriy Filipchuk, Konstantin Kulagov and Dementiy Cheparev, girls: Anna Lukyanova, Nina Okhotnikova and Svetlana Vasilyeva.

ARNHEM (NED): This year’s Papendal Games have been cancelled due to the difficulty of finding sponsors to support the event, the organization has announced in a press release. It’s the second year in a row that the meet cannot take place and if the organization is to continue the name might change into the Arnhem Games. The Papendal Games have been staged since 1975 and once had big names such as Carl Lewis, Nelli Cooman and Rutger Smith on the startlist.

USEDOM (GER): German middle distance runner Rene Bauschinger has suffered a severe setback in his preparation towards the European championships after having surgery to his lung last week. Bauschinger is the 2003 European junior champion and felt pain in his lung after training. Doctors diagnosed a hole in his right lung and operated right away. He will have to take rest for another six weeks.

BERLIN (GER): European marathon champion Ulrike Maisch is not yet fully recovered from a series of injuries that kept her away from last year‘s World Championships but still has her eyes set on the European championships in Barcelona. If she recovers in time she might still be able to make the German marathon team. However, Germany‘s marathon team is struggling with Sabrina Mockenhaupt and Irina Mikitenko aiming at running on the track and with Susanne Hahn pregnant.

PRAGUE (CZE): Javelin world record holder Barbora Spotakova during the announcement being one of the ambassadors of IAAF Diamond League also outlined her whole plans for the summer. The media briefing on Friday was attended by Czech minister of defence Karel Bartak as she is member of army club Dukla Praha. She plans to start in Doha on May 14, then continue at Danek Memorial in Turnov (May 25) and Ostrava Golden Spike on May 27. Apart of Diamond League meetings she plans Odlozil memorial on June 14 in Praha, European Team Championships in Budapest (First League), Czech national championships in Trinec in July and of course the European Championships in Barcelona. Spotakova just returned from training camp at Grand Canaria. „We had a very good training camp, some nice and long throws. I started with quality training earlier than last year and also the fact that I competed indoors helped me a lot,“ said the olympic gold medalist. Next training camp is planned for Debrecen, Hungary since April 25 with her usual training partner Barbara Madejczyk of Poland. Spotakova hopes that the early season ending, her event final is in Zurich will allow her still to have something from late summer at home. „The only thing might be Continental Cup in Split aftewards,“ she comments.

WARSZAWA (POL): On Thursday a special running race was staged in honour of Polish Olympic Committee president Piotr Nurowski who died in the plane crash of Smolensk, Russia last Saturday. It started in Krakowskie Przedmescie and finished near the building of the national olympic committee.

LEXINGTON (USA): One of the fastest women in the world, world champion and U.S. Olympian, Lauryn Williams, announced the signing of Saucony, Inc. to a multi-year endorsement contract wrote www.trackandfieldnews.com. As part of the endorsement relationship, the brand also announced that a Saucony Run For Good grant in Williams’ name will be designated to support community-based track and field programs specifically for girls. Saucony’s recently also signed Wallace Spearmon, Jr., the winner of three consecutive World Outdoor Championship 200 meter medals.

INDIANAPOLIS (USA): Norm Frank, who has completed 965 marathons with his personal best of 3 hours 22 minutes, will be presented with a Special Recognition Award by USA Track & Fields Masters Long Distance Running Committee on April 19. The date of the presentation was chosen to coincide with the 114th running of the Boston Marathon, a race that Frank has competed in 30 times.

NEW YORK (USA): Galen Rupp of Portland, the 2009 NCAA Outdoor 5000- and 10,000-meter champion and Amy Begley of Boulder are leading the field at the New York Road Runners (NYRR) Distance Carnival held on on 23 April. Is it a part of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at the University of California at Berkeley. The NYRR Distance Carnival program will feature a women‘s 3000 meters and a men‘s 5000 and 10,000 meters. Begley, an Olympian at 10 000 m in Beijing, will be joined in the race by Japanese 5000m Olympian Yuriko Kobayashi, 2010 USA indoor 3000m champion Renee Metivier Baillie, five-time USA champion Katie McGregor, and three-time Olympian Jen Rhines. The men‘s 10,000m will have a strong Japanese participation, led by Yuki Sato, who ran a personal best 27:38.25 at the Brutus Hamilton meeting last year. He‘s hoping to run close to Toshinari Takaoka‘s nine year-old national record of 27:35.09. American Brett Gotcher, who made a 2:10:36 marathon debut in Houston last January, is also entered. ROMA (ITA): Italy named its squad of IAAF Race Walking World Cup in Mexico in May. Headliner is olympic winner at 50 km Alex Schwazer. Olympic winner 2004 Ivano Brugnetti heads the 20 km team with Berlin fourth placer Giorgio Rubino, Fortunato D´Onofrio, Jean Jacques Nkouloukidi and Matteo Giupponi. Women were not selected, but both junior teams will travel.

JOHANNESBURG (RSA): World 800 metres champion Caster Semenya was not named in the preliminary selection of South African team for summer African Championships. That is only preliminary selection, final will be announced early July. In the initial selection 57 names. For example male 800 m world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, world indoor champion in long jump Khotso Mokoena, sprint champion Simon Magakwe, 400 m runner Ofentse Mogawane, middle distance runner Juan Van Deventer, steeple record holder Ruben Ramolefi. Already clear is the trio for 400 m hurdles with Cornel Fredericks, Wouter Le Roux and LJ van Zyl.

BARCELONA (ESP): In an interview with the LOC for this summer’s European Championships in Barcelona British world indoor champion Dwain Chambers has explained he is running fast times in practice and feels mentally strong, suggesting he could medal at the championships. Chambers once again expressed his regrets about his mistakes in the past and was quoted that one of the most important things he could have done for track and field was to come back and win the gold medal in Doha “If the youth of today can learn from the mistakes that I have made over the years, then it must be a positive message,” Chambers said.

NAIROBI (KEN): David Okeyo, Chief Excecutive Officer of the senior African Athletics Championships, has invited Caster Semenya to run at the continental championships this summer. Semenya has not yet been cleared by the IAAF to run in international competitions but Okeyo sees no problems and is convinced it will add an extra spark to the competition he said on nation.co.ke. The organisers of the African Athletics Championships also said that South Africa has missed the deadline for registering athletes and are not sure if the country will send a team. Athletics Kenya secretary-general David Okeyo said on Tuesday he had still not received preliminary forms from Athletics South Africa for the July event. He said he had been forced to extend the deadline from March 31 until the end of April. The team should be announced by wednesday.

BARCELONA (ESP): 1992 1500 m olympic winner Fermín Cacho will be one of the special guests of the blue-colored track presentation in the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys de Montjuďc this Friday. The Barcelona 1992 Olympic 1500champion will have the honour to inaugurate the synthetic track together with Mayor Jordi Hereu, the state’s sport secretary, Jaime Lissavetzky, and the president of European Athletics, Hansjörg Wirz.
