BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Britain´s bid for 2016 European Athletics Championships, along with Croatia (Split) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam) is expected to be represented by Birmingham. The city recently announced plans for an £12.25 ($19.41 million) redevelopment of Alexander Stadium designed to enable the arena to stage major international events. Martin Mullaney, the Councillor in charge of Leisure at Birmingham City Council, also told the City Cabinet last month that they had already started investigating the possibility of launching a bid. Informs insidethegames. The European Championships has never been staged in Britain. Birmingham will host in summer also the Samsung Diamond League meeting which will be switched from Gateshead.

SHANGHAI (CHN): China Daily informs that hurdles former world record holder Liu Xiang is targeting his third successive victory at the Asian Games next month, one of his biggest events during a prolonged comeback from an Achilles’ tendon injury. “I want to win at my third Asian Games and add one gold medal for China. I’m in good form recently and I want to get the right feeling back gradually,” Liu was quoted. His coach Sun said he can run between 13.30-13.40. Exactly 13.40 is the best time of the year for Liu in 2010. Only one hurdler achieved faster time this year in Asia, his team-mate Shi Dongpeng 13.39 when he beat him at Shanghai Diamond League meeting.

Coach Glen Mills said that because of recent injuries the 2007 200 m world finalist Marvin Anderson might switch to 400 m in 2011. His bests of 2010 were 10.21 and 20.48. Beijing Olympic women 400 m finalist Rosemarie Whyte is battling with a career threatening injury. “In the case of Rosemarie”, Mills said, “you don’t want to put the blame on anyone, but the facts are, she suffered a major injury in 2006. An injury that was partially healed and because she did not receive proper treatment, became chronic over the years.” Mills further said the injury is causing her great pain and discomfort and added “I know she is under great stress, because it’s career threatening.”

BUDAPEST (HUN): Hungarian Athletics Federation announced its Athletes of the Year 2010. The titles went to hurdler Daniel Kiss who won bronze medal in Barcelona and among women the long distance runner Krisztina Papp (8th in Barcelona at 10 000 m). Coach of the year is Istvan Tomhauser who leads the preparation of national record holder Kiss. In the U23 category the top ones are hurdler Balazs Baji and shot putter Anita Marton, in the junior category 400 m runner Marcell Deak Nagy and middle distance runner Viktoria Gyurkes.

PRAGUE (CZE): Prague Indoor meeting in the biggest hall in the country (02 Arena) which debuted in 2009 will be postponed for future years. In 2010 it was not held due to the clash with Winter Olympic Games and other activities of the organizing body. For the 2011 the organising companies Ceska Sportovni and TK Plus informed that it will not be staged due to the priorities given to jubilee 50th Ostrava Golden Spike meeting (IAAF World Challenge) planned for May 31 2011. During the first edition of the indoor meet Meseret Defar clocked 2 miles all-time world best and Yelena Isinbayeva attacked the world indoor record in pole vault.

TRONDHEIM (NOR, Oct 24): Norwegian triumph on home soil at Nordic CC Championships. Home team won 6 out of 8 gold medals. In senior race at 9 km Sondre Nordstad Moen achieved 27:47 ahead of Dabaya Badyaso 27:48 and Swedish star Mustafa Mohamed 28:11. Best overall was Kenyan guest Hillary Kipchumba (27:47). Best Finnish Jussi Utriainen was 5th (28:27) and best from Danemark Morten Munkholm 6th (28:32). In women 7.5 km Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal achieved 26:41 to beat team-mate Kirsten Maraton Melkevik 26:47 and Sandra Eriksson of Finland (27:08). Johann Brugge of Norway was the best junior (19:36 at 6 km) and only non-Norwegian individual win for Saara Nikander of Finland in women junior 4.5 km race (16:53). In teams Norway won all categories except of junior women where Sweden was the best side.

KINGSTON (JAM): TrackAlerts informs that World and Olympic sprint relay gold medalist Aleen Bailey, is the 2010 winner of the Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence. The award caters to persons who have displayed a high level of integrity, national pride, dedication, decorum, humility and discipline, both on and off the field, among other things. They must also have previously represented Jamaica at the senior level. Bailey, who was pleasantly surprised by the decision, was presented with her award by Prime Minister Bruce Golding, at the award function held at the Jamaica Pegasus, on Wednesday night. She pocketed $500,000 together with the crystal trophy. Other nominees included Veronica Campbell-Brown, two-time Olympic 200m champion, Jomo Pitterson, International Master chess champion, and David Summerbell Jnr, international motor racing champion. Berlin World Championship 100-metre hurdles gold medalist Brigitte Foster-Hylton - last year’s winner, and Atlanta’s Olympic 400-metre hurdles Champion Deon Hemmings-McCatty in 2006, were previous winners.

COLORADO SPRINGS (USA): USADA announced that former sprinter who was involved in agents business recently Ramon Clay has accepted a two-year period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation based on his use and possession of anabolic agents and hormones, and other substances during a period from 2000-2004. Clay’s two-year period of ineligibility began on November 9, 2009, the date USADA initiated formal proceedings against Clay. Additionally, Clay is disqualified from all competitive results achieved on and subsequent to January 1, 2000, the date he first committed the anti-doping rule violations based on evidence currently in USADA’s possession, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes. His personal bests 10.21 in 2003 and 20.05 in 2001 will be so cancelled. Best marks for Clay in period before 2000 are 10.31 and 20.06. Deleted will be his results at World Championships 2001 (quarterfinals participation in the 200 m) and mainly the fourth place in World Cup 2002 in Madrid. USA men will still remain in fourth overall place.

LAUSANNE (SUI): The International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Medical Commission has set up an “Ad-Hoc Research Working Group on Body Composition, Health and Performance” to address issues related to these topics in weight-sensitive sports, which met in Graz, Austria, last week. Preventing illness and injury in sport is a pre-condition to promote training adaptations and thus to enable optimal performances. However, the health of the athletes can be severely threatened by current weight loss practices with serious consequences. Among the three groups of sports is also long distance running. The working group, which is coordinated by Prof. Dr Wolfram Müller from the University of Graz, Austria, has been set up for two years and, during this period, will provide a forum for information exchange, collate normative data, publish a consensus statement and conduct symposia within the framework of scientific meetings, to name just a few of the several activities envisaged. BEOGRAD (SRB): Extraordinary EA Congress was attended by delegates from 50 European countries. The congress made changes in the statutes in order to prepare the election congress next April in London. For example one more vice-president will be elected (three in total). EA President Hansjorg Wirz informed that Barcelona European Championships were a big success in terms of television coverage, spectators and media interest and results level. Wirz also confirmed he will again bid for his post in next April. The other known candidate is Svein-Arne Hansen of Norway.

PORTSMOUTH (GBR): Stephanie Twell, despite a gruelling schedule at the recent Commonwealth Games, will compete at the Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth on Sunday October 24. The former World Junior Championships 1500 metres title holder, who won bronze over the distance and then finished fourth in the 5000m, will quickly switch from the track to a 10 mile appearance at the south coast venue. SANTIAGO DE CHILE (CHI): Universalsports.com writes that while trapped underground for over two months, Chilean miner Edison Peña ran between three and six miles per day. DENVER (USA): Dathan Ritzenhein who is in preparation for New York City Marathon in November has withdrawn from he Denver Rock´n Roll Half Marathon scheduled for this Sunday. ”But since coming to Albuquerque for some altitude training, we have had some excellent workouts, and this has forced us to re-evaluate our final preparation for New York. As much as I would love to run in Denver, we regrettably have to take the prudent approach of skipping this weekend’s race. It’s with a heavy heart that I have to make the decision not to run in Denver, but as my focus for the year has always been to be at my best for New York, this will give me the best chance of achieving my goals,” Ritzenhein was quoted at runningcompetitor.com.

MELBOURNE (AUS): Australian anti-doping agency announced two years suspension for Nigerian sprinter Bola Lawal (10.29 personal best in 2009) who lives and trains in Australia. He was positive for methandienon at IAAF World Challenge Meeting in Melbourne in March and will not be able to race until April 12, 2012. Initially he won the 100 m (10.33) and was second in the 200 m (20.91) at the meeting.
