NAIROBI (KEN): Double Euro gold medalist Mohammed Farah winds up his six-week training stint in Kenya this week and he hopes to take part in a few cross-country meets before focusing on European Indoor championship. Writes Kenyan media. Farah would be testing his Kenyan training in Edinburgh alongside Chris Thompson after the duo enjoyed their best ever track seasons this year. Farah said his training has been perfect and hopes to return next season. “I have enjoyed training at both Kaptagat and Iten with Moses and Denis Masai. My main focus would be in the European Indoor and World championship in Daegu, where I hope to win a medal,” said Farah, 27.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): IOC President Jacques Rogge has laid the first stone at the site of the Athlete Village for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Rogge praised the preparation for the Games in presence of various VIPs such as former FIFA President Joao Havelange, Rio State Governor Sergio Cabral, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes and Nawal El Moutawakel, who is the chair of the IOC’s Coordination Commission writes Insidethegames.

AMSTERDAM (NED): Former Olympic winner and current agent and meet organizer Ellen Van Langen has commented on the location of the IAAF World Championships in Daegu later this year. In her column in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf Van Langen expressed her concern about the political situation in South Korea and the isolated location of Daegu. She also mentioned the problem of television rights for the World championships in Europe as in many European countries it is still uncertain whether the competition will be aired on television.

KRASNODAR (RUS): World Indoor 2008 pole vault gold medalist Yevgeniy Lukyanenko is set for a comeback. KINGSTON (JAM): Jamaican junior talent Samantha Elliot wants to focus on both the short and long hurdles in 2011. Elliot has moved to coach Lennox Graham at the Johnson C Smith University, who will take over the athletes conditioning next month writes trackalerts.com. RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): The Rio City Hall and the construction company Carvalho Hosken have signed a contract for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Games. The company will built the athletes village, which will comprise of 34 12-storey buildings, on an area of 75 hectares in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. The village will offer 2448 three and four bedroom, high standard apartments with balcony, dining and living rooms, a kitchen and a utility room. The Olympic village will be located at less than 10 minutes traveling from the training and competition facilities for 46% of the athletes. 73% of the athletes will be under 25 minutes away from their training and competition venues reports insidethegames.biz.

PARIS (FRA): A group of elite French pole vaulters is back in France after a training camp in the island of Réunion. The group, among others with Renaud Lavillenie, Romain Mesnil, Damiel Dossevi and Vanessa Boslak, had a highly succesful training camp and praised the great conditions in which they trained on athle.com.

KINGSTON (JAM): Jamaica Gleaner writes that having upgraded the JN International Invitational meet to IAAF World Challenge status, the sport’s world governing body has also committed 30 000 USD as for every other meet in the series towards the staging of the event, which will run at the National Stadium on May 7 next year. Additionally, it has also been revealed that the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) was originally approached by the IAAF ahead of this year’s staging of the meet, with the idea of an upgrade. However, certain proposed changes to the meet structure and the number of events that could be run, forced careful consideration from the administration. “We had the opportunity to have the meet upgraded from this year, but it was something that we were reluctant to really take on at that time given the number of events and the types of events that they (IAAF) normally wants to see and there were other little things that we felt would affect the way we have been running our meet in the past,” said JAAA President Howard Aris.

NORDHAUSEN (GER): Top three best shot putters in the world will compete at the special indoor meet on January 21 in Nordhausen. World champion Christian Cantwell with Reese Hoffa and Cory Martin will throw in Germany. They will also compete as US Team against Germans (Ralf Bartels, Marco Schmidt, David Storl). Not totally confirmed is the participation of Storl, if not available Andy Dittmar is ready to compete. Women competition will see home Denise Hinrichs with Italian Chiara Rosa, French Jessica Cerival and Dutch Melissa Boekelman.

OOSTENDE (BEL): The Belgian 4x400m team has been named Belgian sports team of the year during a nationally televised show. Team captain Cedric Van Branteghem picked up the prize.
