NEW YORK (USA): Participation in American road races grew by a healthy 11% in 2009, according to a detailed analysis prepared by Race Results Weekly.The analysis, which looked at the results of 200 well-established road races in 38 states and the District of Columbia, found that 168 of the races, or 84%, showed growth in the number of official finishers compared to 2008. A total of 1,365,981 finishers were recorded by the group of events analyzed, up 133,706 from 2008. Year-over-year changes ranged from a gain of 10,199 for the Rock ‚n‘ Roll Las Vegas Half-Marathon (+132%), to a loss of 3,119 for the City of Los Angeles Marathon (-18%). The median event had 4,372 finishers. Races held over the 5-kilometer, 10-mile, and half-marathon distances showed the biggest increases, with each of those groups topping 15% growth. In the 10-mile group, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, held each April in Washington, D.C., was up a hefty 21% to 14,883 finishers. The results of 44 marathons from 28 states were included in the analysis, representing 297,683 finishers, up 5% from 2008. The ING New York City Marathon raised its number of allowed entrants this year to accommodate record demand and recorded a world record 43,660 finishers, up 5,564 or 15% from last year.

TORONTO (CAN): 400 m world indoor champion from Valencia 2008 Canadian Tyler Christopher will not try to defend his title next March in Doha. As his agent Paul Doyle confirmed, he will concentrate on the summer season. Because of injury he was unable to run at Berlin World Championships but had unbeaten record indoors with three wins in Glasgow, Stockholm and Birmingham.

TALLINN (EST): Track athletes ended well in the Estonian Sports Personalities of the year vote. European indoor champion in long jump Ksenija Balta was voted as number one in the women section. HAVANA (CUB): Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and Cuban triple jump world champion Yargelis Savigne were announced the winners of the usual Prensa Latina news agency poll on the best Latin American and Caribbean athletes in 2009. Bolt got 45 votes ahead of Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona with 18. Savigne obtained 28 votes what was 12 points over Jamaican 100 m world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser.

WARSZAWA (POL): Croatian high jump world champion Blanka Vlasic ended excellent fifth in the vote of European News Agencies about the European Sports Personality of the Year 2009. Swiss tennis star Roger Federer is number one with 135 points ahead of Formula 1 top man Jenson Button (81), biathlon legend Ole Einar Bjorndalen of Norway (73) and rally driver Sebastien Loeb (56). Vlasic as fifth got 51 points. Another track athlete in the top ten is Norwegian javelin world champion Andreas Thorkildsen as tenth (36).

DUBLIN (IRL): Athletics Northern Ireland and Athletics Ireland are pleased to announce that Irish Olympian Derval O’Rourke will be competing in the Woodie’s DIY Irish Indoor Athletic Championships at the Odyssey Arena Belfast on February 6-7 next year. Athletics Ireland informs. This is the seventh Irish Indoors meeting in the North which has been made possible by the generous assistance of title sponsor Woodie’s DIY and funding partners Belfast City Council. Once again upwards of 1000 athletes will be participating at the landmark Odyssey Arena, which hosts Ireland’s only indoor hydraulic 200-meter running track.

Christmas time also in world of athletics. Some were still running their normal planned portion, some having holidays. Or not exactly. In Russia for example the Christmas celebrations are later on January 6. That is why Russian Athletics Federation had its annual conference on Thursday. And by the way also Pole Vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva is normally training at her base in Formia, Italy. She was voted Sportswoman of the Year by US Sports Academy where 1.7 millions voters participated through websites of NBC Sports and USA Today. 10 000 m World Champion Linet Masai was third. Worlds fastest man Usain Bolt went home on December 24 to Trelawny and will celebrate Christmas with his family as it is usual in Jamaica, USA, Great Britain, Australia and other countries on December 25th. Coach Glen Mills gave the whole group a break until Monday December 28. Bolt was third in the USSA vote as he was beaten by boxer Manny Pacquiao of Philippines and tennis star Roger Federer.

LONDON (GBR): Usain Bolt and Sanya Richards are Athletes of the Year by readers of Peter Matthews and Mel Watman bulletin Athletics International. Bolt recieved 548 points ahead of Kenenisa Bekele (342) and Steven Hooker (165). Fourth is Tyson Gay (104) ahead of LaShawn Merritt (90). With slight differences the same top five as by Track and Field News. In the women section Richards got 420 points ahead of Blanka Vlasic (247), Valerie Vili (232). That is the same order as by Track and Field News. Only afterwards small change. Yelena Isinbayeva is fourth (115) beating Anita Wlodarczyk into fifth (109). That is reversed in comparison with the US monthly.

US ATHLETES OF THE YEAR: GAY AND RICHARDS

MOUNTAIN VIEW (USA): As already announced by USATF also by Track and Field News the US Athletes of the Year 2009 are Tyson Gay and Sanya Richards. Gay got 254 points (90.7 percent) close before LaShawn Merritt who achieved 245 and that is 87.5 percent. Also close third Dwight Phillips with 229 (81.8 percent). He is followed by other world champions Christian Cantwell (fourth, 194), Trey Hardee (fifth, 180) and Kerron Clement (sixth, 147). Top ten is completed by 7th Bernard Lagat (112), 8th Jeremy Wariner (53), 9th Terrence Trammell (42) and 10th Dathan Ritzenhein (36). Richards was voted almost unanimous with 268 points what is 99.3 percent. She is followed by other sprinters Allyson Felix (239) and Carmelita Jeter (212). Long jump world champion Brittney Reese is fourth (197) ahead of Lashinda Demus (146). Then distance runners are following Anna Willard (6th, 102), Jenny Barringer (7th, 89) and Shannon Rowbury (8th, 85). Hurdler Dawn Harper (9th, 70) and another runner Christin Wurth-Thomas (10th, 21) are completing the women top ten.

STOCKHOLM (SWE): Sweden´s top ten for 2009 is headed by high jumper Linus Thornblad. He achieved the best placing for the country in Berlin at World Championships (5th) and cleared impressive 236 during the indoor season. Unfortunately due to injury he is going to miss the indoor season 2010. BARCELONA (ESP): European indoor pole vault champion Renauld Lavillenie will be the main protagonist of the next promotional campaign of the European Athletics Championships Barcelona 2010. The young French athlete, who obtained the bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, will substitute Portuguese long jumper Naide Gomes, who was the face of the fourth advertising campaign. Organizers are informing in a release. Lavillenie will appear jumping over one of the many modernist lampposts on Paseo de Grácia, next to the Pedrera, one of Barcelona‘s unique monuments, in order to draw the citizens‘ attention to athletics and Barcelona 2010.

NAIROBI (KEN): The Nation writes that Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has given Nyayo National Stadium the green light to host next year‘s Senior Africa Athletics Championship. Nyayo replaces Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, as the venue of the July 28 to August 1 event, and it needs only a little sprucing up to have it ready for the event, the Local Organizing Committee says. LOC chairman Isaiah Kiplagat said only a warm-up track will be added on the stadium with minor renovation work on the VIP, doping, massage and changing rooms. There will also be a media tribune set up to ease quick access to the mixed zone area.

CANBERRA (AUS): New Zealand´s World Juniors 2006 fifth placer Jessica Penney now lives in Canberra and trains with Craig Hilliard. She is now able to represent Australia since last August. Her best mark from 2006 is 637 cm what is also New Zealand junior record. Last week she jumped 602.

LISBON (POR): Coach Joao Ganco confirmed that Triple jump olympic winner Nelson Evora will not compete during the indoor season 2010. All plans of Evora are oriented towards Barcelona 2010. In his medal collection he is missing the one from European Championships as last time in Goteborg was fourth in triple and sixth in long jump. He will not compete indoors at all, not even at national level. „He is continuing with training, but it is nothing strong. Mainly focusing on technical aspects. He is still in pain after the stress fracture. But of course is not jumping. We hope to start with special training for summer around February,” coach is explaining.

BYDGOSZCZ (POL): Nearly every Sunday in last weeks at 11 am at Myslecinek Park in Bydgoszcz runners are competing to the WXC 2010. It started October 25 with „Cross Bydgoski“ (Bydgoszcz Cross) and 509 participants. Then, starting from 8th November again the number of amateurs and non-amateurs runners was growing. Last Sunday despite minus 15 degrees some 50 persons came. In the field also national U-23 runner Damian Kabat (46th at European CC in Dublin) with Andrzej Urbaniak who is ultra marathonrunner.

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Rio de Janeiro‘s Maracana Stadium, which is due to stage the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics as well as the 2014 World Cup final, is to get a 300 million USD face-lift, the city‘s Secretary of Sports and Tourism announced. The work on the iconic stadium, the largest in the world when it was inaugurated in 1950 for the World Cup, is planned to be completed by December 2012.The Maracana is classified as an historic monument so the facade will be maintained but a roof will be added to the five-storey oval stadium. Originally built to hold 200,000, the present capacity will be reduced from 87,000 to 82,000 at the recommendation of FIFA, football‘s world governing body who are overseeing preparations for the 2014 World Cup. Athletics competitions at 2016 Games will be held in another stadium.

BEIJING (CHN): Coach Zhu Lidong and his two female sprinters who cheated in a dope test have been given bans of up to four years. Agencies are informing. Ha Xianpin has 11.56 and 23.39 lifetime bests and was second at national championships in the 200 m. The other one Teng Haina (11.70/24.04) was sent by coach as Ha to take the out of competition test in July. But the testers realized she is looking different. Long distance runner Xie Fang (solid quality PB´s 15:03.95 and 31:21.25) missed a test in July and was also banned for four years.

CARACAS (VEN): Triple and long jumper Veronica Davis and high jumper Albert Bravo have been voted Athletes of the Year in Venezuela. Bravo has an interesting versatility with improving to 46.48 at 400 m, 13.89 at 110 m Hurdles and clearing 222 in high jump. He won two golds and one silver at Bolivar Games. Davis won the Bolivar Games and improved the national triple jump record to 13.97 m.

DOHA (QAT): The site of next years World Indoor Championships will stage another important event still in this year. The Golf Countries Championships in cross country on December 23.

As first ever 14 years old shot putter he achieved a 20+ mark 20.42 m. He also improved with that the national U17 record by Tom Walsh (17) who just the day before got 20.21. Gill will celebrate his 15th birthday in one week (December 20).


FIUMICINO (ITA, Dec 13): In the jubilee 20th Best Woman road race in Rome region Silvia Somaggio clocked 33:45 at 10 km ahead of Vincenza Sicari (33:50). In men´s race Kenyan Ezekiel Meli achieved 29:27 ahead of Moroccan Issam Zaid (29:39) and Cosimo Caliandro (29:56).

KUALA LUMPUR (MAS): ATFS President Paul Jenes informs that statistician Balwant Singh was awarded his Datukship from the Malaysian Governor. It is a senior order of chivalry in Malaysia and is a Federal award. Balwant‘s late father was also a Datuk and an ATFS member and both were/are prolific statisticians. Balwant was the official statistician of the Asian Athletic Federation for many years. His brother Dilbagh competed in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics steeple race.

She tested positive at European Junior Championships in Novi Sad on July 26 that means after the 4x400 m relay where Ukraine won and she ran the first leg. Interestingly her 4th place from individual race remains. She is suspended for two years until August 24, 2011. The whole Ukrainian team will be so most probably disqualified and the gold could go to Russia, silver to Germany and bronze to France.

DOHA (QAT): IAAF published the detailed time-table for 13th World Indoor Championships in Doha. The concept is new and should be more attractive for fans and media. First day (Friday, March 12) is having no finals, only heats and qualification added by first day of heptathlon and 400 m semifinals (men and women). Second day Saturday has in the morning session only heats and qualifications, heptathlon (second day) and pentathlon will be staged. In the afternoon session only finals (and semifinals at mens 60 m and womens 60 m hurdles) are on the program. During last day (Sunday) no morning session is planned and in the afternoon session only finals (with semifinals at mens 60 m hurdles and womens 60 m) will be held.

MONTE CARLO (MON): IAAF informs that Tsegaye Kebede has only been running marathons for two and a half years, but in that short span of time he has reached a level of accomplishment that no one else has in history. With his 2:05:18 course record victory at Fukuoka, a 2:05:20 runner-up at London in April and 2:08:35 bronze medal at the Berlin World Championships, the 22-year-old Ethiopian averaged 2:06:24 in 2009, the fastest ever for three marathons in a calendar year. In fact, he did it in less than eight months.

MAGDEBURG (GER): World championships shot put silver medalist Nadine Kleinert is not sure about her participation in the coming indoor season. Four weeks ago she started with training but then started to claim about elbow pain. Medical examinations showed fortunately that a surgery is not necessary. She is planning a special therapy and hopes to be back in training soon. She still plans to compete at World Indoors in Doha in winter.

JOHANNESBURG (RSA): Athletics South Africa was stable after its board was suspended and replaced with an interim leadership body in the fall-out from the Caster Semenya scandal, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) claimed. HONG KONG (HKG): Former olympic and world gold medalist Liu Xiang of China is ready to compete at East Asian Games this week in Hong-Kong. That was confirmed by Chinese media after his last check-up on Saturday. A year after Liu had surgery on his right Achilles tendon in Houston, his US doctor, Tom Clanton, arrived Shanghai on Friday to check on his star patient. After reviewing scans of Liu‘s foot and watching him train on Saturday, Clanton, who performed the operation on Liu, said the foot had fully recovered and he could resume intensive training. Liu also plans to run at World Indoor Championships in Doha.

BERLIN (GER): German fifth placer from Olympic Games 2004 at 20 km walk Melanie Seeger plans a comeback after baby-break. Girma used a late surge to pull away from American Josh Cox and won in 2:13:42. BEIRUT (LEB): Former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat praised organizers of the Blom Beirut International for offering the next generation of African runners to sample the atmosphere of a big city marathon. Tergat admitted to being impressed by the how the Beirut Marathon which despite the instability of the Lebanon has grown from strength to strength since its inception six years ago. Entries raised to almost 32,000 participants from around over 50 countries around the world - a vast increase on the inaugural 6,000. Tergat not competing himself is instead looking forward to watching several unknown athletes notably from Ethiopia and Kenya performing in the seventh staging of event which also incorporates 5000m and 10000m road races this Sunday.

NAIROBI (KEN): The Standard writes that Athletics Kenya will issue a statement in the coming year suspending all road races in the country until the federation reviews how they are organized and run. At the same time, AK will also set the minimum prize money road races can offer to athletes as it seeks to clamp down on the bludgeoning numbers of such events in the country.

ROMA (ITA): Already 8000 runners are entered the Rome Marathon on March 21 next year. It is an increase by 12 percent in comparison to last edition, interestingly bigger interest comes from abroad.

LONDON (GBR): Timesonline.co.uk is writing that interesting piece about disgraced sprinters Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery. Last year, Jones served six months in prison for perjury. The year before she married Barbados sprinter Obadele Thompson with whom she has had another child after the first one with Montgomery. Tim Montgomery says that their relationship is so torn that he has not seen their son for three years. „I wrote to Marion from prison,“ he says. „I said, ‚I know we‘ve been through a lot of things, I know we‘ve both done wrong things. And I wish you the best. But I can‘t figure out why I can‘t see my son. She never wrote back.“

REGENSBURG (GER): German club LG Telis Finanz Regensburg will have new star-member. It is Luxemburg´s 2006 European silver winner at 800 m David Fiegen with national record 1:44.83. PARIS (FRA): French long jump record holder Salim Sdiri said for federation website that is next goal is to compete at World Indoor Championships in Doha. He improved the national mark last summer to 842 and was 6th at World Championships in Berlin. At World Indoors his best position so far is 8th in Birmingham 2003. In summer the European Championships is the top highlight. He expects great competition there mainly from German Sebastian Bayer and Greek record holder Luis Tsatoumas.

BEIJING (CHN): Athens 2004 110 m hurdles Olympic champion Liu Xiang will lead a star-studded Chinese squad in the 5th East Asian Games in Hong Kong. The dates for the event are Dec 5 – 13 and it is the largest multi-sport competition ever staged in Hong Kong. Athletics will be held in second part (Dec 10-13).

CHEMNITZ (GER): The 15th edition of traditional indoor meeting in Chemnitz will not be held this year due to reconstruction of the track.

HAMBURG (GER): European Indoor long jump champion Sebastian Bayer is changing his club. From Bremen LT he is going to Hamburger SV.
