MARATHON SUNDAY


MILANO (ITA): Ruggero Pertile, fourth at the European Championships in Barcelona and winner at the Turin Marathon last November, will carry the Italian hopes after a good training stint in Kenya. The marathon runner from Padua, will take on Solomon Bushendich, winner at the 2006 Amsterdam Marathon in 2:08:52 and second in Kosice 2010 in 2:08:41 (PB), Joel Kemboi Kimurer, who will make his debut in the marathon after winning the 2009 Prague Half Marathon in 1:00:09 and finishing third in the Rome Ostia Half Marathon in 1:00:05 and Daniel Too Kiprugat (twice 2:08 in the past two editions of the Paris Marathon). In the women's race Monica Wangari, third in the Roma Ostia in 1:11:37, will start as the favourite against Italians Marcella Mancini (twice Italian champion in 2006 and 2010) and former 3000 steeplechase Italian record holder Emma Quaglia who will make her debut over the distance after clocking 1:13:20 in Santa Margherita Ligure. No less than 10 000 runners will take part in the two top events, the Marathon which celebrates its 11nd edition and the Relay Marathon which will be staged for the second time after last year's success. The Milan Marathon will start from the Fiera of Rho-Pero and will finish in Piazza Castello. The route has been inaugurated in 2010 and will cross the most characteristic parts of the city to end in Piazza Castello.

GLASGOW (GBR): Following a thrilling 2010 event, UK Athletics has confirmed that Super8 2011 will take place at Glasgow’s Scotstoun Stadium on Thursday 9 June. After a successful launch in 2009 in Cardiff, the unique competition format has gone from strength to strength and once again will pitch eight cities head to head in a two-hour, spectator-friendly athletics competition. The event is being delivered in partnership with Glasgow Life on behalf of the city of Glasgow.
