HEADLINES


WORLD LEADS FOR JAMES AND SPENCER

LONDON (GBR, Aug 5): Superb athletics on nice summer evening at Crystal Palace before sell-out crowds (at the end little bit cooler, only difficulty, strong wind). Despite no-show of Asafa Powell, two world leads by young Kirani James and Kaliese Spencer and five meet records in total. Rudisha beats Kaki and Robles was over Oliver (in-between Richardson) and both are going unbeaten to Daegu.

MEN

100 m: Great display of shape by Yohan Blake who won against -1.6 in 9.95 and beat Carter 10.01 and Rodgers 10.04.

400 m: What a debut at European pro meet. Junior Kirani James of Grenada wins in 44.61, world lead and second best ever junior perfomer. Gonzales continues in sub 45 shape as second.

800 m: Rudisha after nice battle with Kaki wins in MR and UK All-comers 1:42.91 and will travel to Daegu as unbeaten this year. All credit to second Kaki 1:43.13.

3000 m: Farah wins his Daegu test in 7:40.15.

5000 m: Mottram gets this one in 13:23.97, but no more standards, Thompson fourth 13:34.31.


RESULTS

TURKU (FIN, Aug 5): Finnish running talent Johana Matintalo clocked new national U15 record in 800 m heats at National Championships with 2:08.25 (she is born 1996). In long jump qualification Petter Lax got 783 and Tommi Evila 780. Finals are on the programme on Saturday and Sunday.


OTHER NEWS

LONDON (GBR): Alfa Romeo has teamed up with Kelly Sotherton, Lisa Dobriskey, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and Iwan Thomas and top photographer Fergus Greer to raise money for Heart Research UK. The athletes were snapped alongside an Alfa MiTo car in a series of risqué poses in the runup to this weekend’s Diamond League at Crystal Palace. With a power and beauty theme and the exclusive selection of photos have been entitled “Without heart we could be mere machines”. To celebrate the climax of the track and field season, Alfa Romeo will donate £100 to Heart Research UK for every new red Alfa MiTo sold during August reports Athletics Weekly.
