RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA): Rio de Janeiro‘s Maracana Stadium, which is due to stage the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympics as well as the 2014 World Cup final, is to get a 300 million USD face-lift, the city‘s Secretary of Sports and Tourism announced. The work on the iconic stadium, the largest in the world when it was inaugurated in 1950 for the World Cup, is planned to be completed by December 2012.The Maracana is classified as an historic monument so the facade will be maintained but a roof will be added to the five-storey oval stadium. Originally built to hold 200,000, the present capacity will be reduced from 87,000 to 82,000 at the recommendation of FIFA, football‘s world governing body who are overseeing preparations for the 2014 World Cup. Athletics competitions at 2016 Games will be held in another stadium.

LA PLAGNE (FRA): Former high hurdles world champion Ladji Doucoure reports knee inflammation which will stop him for two weeks. But as his coach Renaud Longuevre confirmed for French media his indoor season should not be in dagner.

BRUSSELS (BEL): Latest addition into the field of Sunday´s Iris Lotto CrossCup event (IAAF Permit) in Brussels is Italian best runner Andrea Lalli, former European U23 and junior CC Champion. The summer European U23 silver winner was a member last weekend in Dublin of Italian bronze winning team.
