MARATHON NEWS

ROTTERDAM (NED): Kenyan James Kwambai is the pre race favorite at this year’s jubilee 30th edition of the Fortis Marathon of Rotterdam. Two of his compatriots Bernard Kipyego and Jonathan Maiyo will make their debut in the marathon and might put down a time faster than any other debutant has ever run. Kipyego finished fourth in last year’s Rotterdam half marathon in 59.10, last month he clocked a 1:00.02 in Den Haag. Maiyo was runner-up in last year’s Rotterdam half with a time of 59.08 and is also looking to become the fastest debutant ever. The fastest debutant ever is Kenyan Evans Rutto who clocked 2:05.50 in the marathon of Chicago in 2003. In the women’s race Ethiopian debutant Meseret Mengistu is the pre race favorite as well as Chinese Zhu Xiaolin (2.23.57), Kenyan Anne Kosgei (2:27.46), Russian Olga Gok (2:28.27) and another Kenyan Irene Jerotich (2:28.57).

OTHER NEWS

WINDHOEK (NAM): Coca Cola has announced a sponsorship for the Coca Cola Frank Fredericks Invitational Athletics Meeting which will take place for the 14th consecutive year on Friday, April 9. The event will see the top eight junior athletes in the country competing against each other in selected field and track events, according to the Namibia Sport. The event will also serve as a qualifying event for the Youth Olympic Games which take place in Singapore in August this year.
