MARSEILLE (FRA): The 14th European Cup 10 000 m in Marseille on June 5th will have a 51 strong men’s field led by British Mo Farah, who just broke the British 10K record on the roads with a time of 27:44. Other strong contenders in the men’s race will be Spain’s José Manuel Martinez, the 2002 European athletics gold medalist and 2006 European silver medalist, Portugese Rui Pedro Silva and German 2006 European champion Jan Fitschen. The women’s field is wide open with a large number of potential medal candidates as 39 athlete will toe the starting line. The British are well presented with Jo Pavey and Hayley Yelling taking on the challenge of German double London Marathon winner Irina Mikitenko and compatriot Sabrina Mockenhaupt. Portugal is also in the mix with Sara Moreira and Ines Monteiro with Ana Dias, while Christelle Daunay who just recently broke the French marathon record to 2:24.22 is in top shape as well. Top three athletes from each category will earn direct qualification to the 2010 European championships in Barcelona.
