GRANADA (ESP): Spanish sports daily Marca reports that Spanish 20 km walker and reigning European champion Francisco „Paquillo“ Fernandez has informed sports authorities and police that he has been in possession of a banned substance (EPO). In a press statement issued Wednesday, the 2004 Olympic silver medallist said he had obtained the substance with a view to using it in 2010, although „fortunately, these products were never used.“ The Andalusian athlete ended his statement by apologizing to his sponsors and fans, universalsports.com writes.

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Double world champion 2007 Bernard Lagat is the latest big name for Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham on February 20. „This year is going really well and I‘m feeling in great shape, so I definitely want to continue that form in Birmingham. I‘m racing over 1500m and I‘m looking forward to running again with Augustine Choge which is always tough,“ he was quoted as David Martin writes. Choge last night in Stockholm clocked world leading 3000 m time. New Zealander Nick Willis the Olympic silver medallist and the current world‘s fastest miler, will also be competing in the 1500m and is sure to prove stiff competition for Lagat.
